15th International Congress of Speleology -- 2009 in TX

Postby Cheryl Jones » Jun 12, 2006 11:07 pm

The 15th International Congress of Speleology will be held in Kerrville, Texas, USA on 19-26 July 2009.

Since it is never too early to begin preparing for a great event, the Web site for the Congress is now available with all of the latest information so you can start planning to attend. The goal of the Web site is to stay so up to date that if you don't find the information you need there, then it is likely that the information is not yet available (although you're always welcome to contact us and check).

The Web site is in English. Our summary leaflet is available as PDFs in
French, German, and Spanish. The leaflet is currently being translated into
Italian and will be posted as soon as it is ready. Later this summer,
print-quality versions of the leaflets will be available on the web too. By
the end of September, the entire Web site will be available in French,
German, Italian, and Spanish.

We encourage you to visit the Web site and bookmark it for future reference: http://www.ics2009.us

If you want to be certain you receive all updates on the Congress or are
interested in helping, contact us at secretary(at) ics2009.us

We look forward to seeing you in Kerrville in 2009! :waving:

George Veni
Chairman, 15th International Congress of Speleology
Adjunct Secretary, International Union of Speleology

P.S.: Please feel free to distribute this information in digital and
printed media.

George wrote up the following in response to someone's inquiry about the ICS. I'm reposting this here to share the info with a wider audience.

I appreciate everyone’s interest and support of the ICS. Let me make one correction. The early registration fee does not end on 31 December 2008 but one month later on 31 January 2009. At that point it goes to $275 and on 1 June 2009, $300. Yes, the cost is higher than an NSS Convention because it an NSS Convention PLUS an International Congress. It has more events and activities, and it lasts eight days instead of five. If you consider the actual cost per day, it is only $1.70 to $7.85/day higher than the 2008 NSS Convention, depending on if you register early or late.

Having this event in the US is a literal once or twice in a lifetime opportunity. We will be the first country to host an ICS twice; the last time was in 1981 before many cavers who are now making significant discoveries were even born. Much of what we now take for granted in terms of techniques, equipment, publications, expeditions, communications, scientific and management advances, and even cave protection laws, were a direct or an indirect result of that ICS. I encourage people to read the 2nd Circular available at http://www.ics2009.us/2ndcirculars.html to see all that will be going on. Many cavers from around the world already see that they can’t afford not to go, and believe this will be the most significant caving and cave science event ever!

Back to deadlines, 1 December 2008 is the deadline for abstracts if you plan to present a paper. This is much earlier than for an NSS Convention because abstracts will be followed by more detailed papers from the authors that will be up to 6 pages long. The papers are due on 1 February 2009 so they can be reviewed and revised, if needed, and then printed in the proceedings in time for the ICS. For details, see http://www.ics2009.us/papers.html. The proceedings will likely be over 2,000 pages of rich information on the state-of-the-art in cave exploration, science, technique, rescue, and management, that will prove a valuable resource for many years.
