Sewanee Mountain Grotto is hosting a post Convention Cave Camp from July 20-25, following the NSS Convention in Huntsville, Alabama. Cavers may arrive on Saturday July 19 to set up camp at Caver’s Paradise, located south of Sewanee Tennessee, and only a 1.5 hour drive from the Convention site. Adjacent to the Franklin Marion State Forest, the campground has tent and RV sites, a bathhouse, a volleyball court, sauna, wood fired hot tub and a large pavilion for evening gatherings after caving.

Cave trips will begin on Sunday July 20 with a led trip to Nunley Mountain Cave, which is horizontal. On Monday July 21 there is a trip to Gourdneck Cave, which has a short vertical entrance drop. On Tuesday July 22 there will be a led trip to Run to the Mill, which is a vertical multi drop and also a trip to nearby Lynch Pit, which is an 80 foot pit with 700 feet of cave. On Wednesday July 23 there is a choice between a vertical trip to Lost Mule, which is 103 foot or to Hermit Cave, which is horizontal. Also, on Wednesday evening there will be a led trip to Neversink to see the glow worms. Good directions and GPS points can also be provided for self- led trips. Many classic caves are within one- half hour’s drive. South Pittsburg Pit, Cagle’s Chasm, Solution Rift, Sawmill Well, and Lost Mule pit are some of the nearby vertical caves. Hermit, Bible Springs, Catacombs, Monteagle Saltpeter Cave, and Horseskull Cave are a few of the nearby horizontal caves. Camps Gulf and Rumbling Falls will also be open but you will need to contact the state of Tennessee for permits. Valhalla, Neversink and Tumbling Rock, all owned by the SCCi, are 1 hour away and Ellisons is only 1.5 hours away. If you are interested in signing up for one of the led trips, please contact Anne Grindle at annegrindle@hotmail.com.

If you’ve had enough caving at Convention, hiking and mountain bike trails can be accessed from the campground. Also, the University of the South (10 miles away) has 26 miles of trails, including several waterfalls and views off the Cumberland Plateau. Sewanee Natural Bridge is a unique sandstone formation you will want to visit. Maureen Handler will also be leading a paddle trip to nearby Nickajack Cave to see the Bat Flight on Sunday July 20. Extra boats are available for those who do not have one, to reserve a space contact Maureen at tnshotgun@earthlink.net.

Tent camping is just $5 per night and RV spots cost $25 for the week, plus $5 per person per night. Directions to Caver’s Paradise can be found at caversparadise.com. The closest grocery stores and restaurants are 12 miles away, so please plan accordingly. Join us for a fun week of caving and fellowship.
