New Caving Calendar Up

Postby Wayne Harrison » May 2, 2006 12:41 pm

I've set up a calendar of caving events to make it easier to see what's coming up and get info.

Point your browser to: http://my.calendars.net/cavingevents

It's set up so that anyone can add an entry, so please add any caving events you are aware off that aren't listed. They are color coded by regional, national, international event.

If you want to add your grotto meetings, feel free.

You can also add your birthday, if you'd like!

Everytime I try and access the calendar, it won't load. I get a timed out error or something like that. I've tried it on two different computers as well.

Anybody else? I've accessed it from several computers at several different locations.

Works for me (Mozilla) and I think it is quite cool, too.

Wayne

Nice calendar.

I put in our Baltimore Grotto meeting, and it's pretty easy to do. If I try to edit it, though, it wants a password. Can we expect to edit the entrys?

Thanks

I've set it so only moderators can edit entires, otherwise anyone could go in and edit someone else's post and add spam links. It doesn't seem to have an "edit your own" since you don't need to log in to post -- so it doesn't know who you are.

If you need something edited, just drop a line to one of the moderators or me.

I've added the MSS's 50th Anniversary which will be held from June 23rd to June 25th. I couldn't locate a link except for the small pop-up found on the MSS Calendar.

not that I think attendance will be affected, but now everyone will know that the Southern Nevada Grotto meeting is today at 7pm :)

Thanks. They both go to the same place. The calendar is slow-loading for me sometimes and I think it's because they have more traffic on their server than they can handle sometimes. Still, I'm glad to have a free resource that puts events into a spatial frame, rather than just lists them erratically.

Well, isn't that spatial?

Converting to Google Calendar

Postby Wayne Harrison » May 29, 2006 6:01 pm

I think I may have found a solution to the problem of the clunky caving events calendar: Google Calendars

I've exported all the info from the current calendar and imported into a Google Calendar. What I really like about this is the info is available for exporting into your own calendar software, such as Outlook, etc. In searching Google, I found several NSS Grottos that already use the system.

Here's the link to the calendar info. If you have a Google account, just use this link to import it:

Image
http://www.google.com/calendar/render?cid=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fcalendar%2Ffeeds%2Fcavechatmods%40gmail.com%2Fpublic%2Fbasic

Google says it's also viewable by non-Google account users but as yet they don't have it in an html format. If you don't have a Google account, you can download that link and save it as a cvs file that can be read by Outlook or any other calendar software that reads cvs files. In the meantime, I'll leave the old HTML calendar up, but make it viewable only to keep from having new stuff added to the old calendar. Any of the forum moderators have access to add things to the calendar, so if you have an event, please let them know.

The calendar loads for me fine, but when I try to add an event it asks for a name and password. Just exactly am I supposed to use. I tried the same login for getting onto the NSS discussion board, but that doesn't work.

One day on my Google calendar I found an advertiser had scheduled a three day event -- something I didn't know anything about. Later it was gone. But it was enough to send me back to my yahoo calendar!

Is this Google doing business? Are we going to find miscellaneous events posted on the forum calendar by advertisers?
