Just posted an amazing gallery of photos from Dave Bunnell about Nevada's Cathedral Gorge State Park.

This location will be featured in one of our geology field trips during the 75th anniversary convention in 2016 in Ely, Nevada

Located in a long, narrow valley mid-way between Las Vegas and Ely, Cathedral Gorge State Park in eastern Nevada is a photographer's dream. The cave-like slot canyons and buff-colored cliffs are the result of geologic processes occurring over tens of millions of years.

The formations, made of silt, clay and volcanic ash, are the remnants of a pre-historic lake. As the landscape changed and more block faulting occurred, water drained from the lake exposing these volcanic ash sediments to the wind and rain, causing erosion of the soft material called bentonite clay.
