Speleofest 2012 in Kentucky

Postby KeyserSoze » Mar 23, 2012 6:06 pm

Mark your calenders for the 41st Speleofest. This year were Get'n Down Yonder in the Bluegrass. We have some new territory to explore so get on down to Kentucky this Memorial Day weekend.

I think I am going to Speleofest but have never caved in Kentucky. I was curious what the caves are like, especially the ones with group leaders. This may sound stupid but are there any pits in Kentucky or are they mostly horizontal entrances?

I have only been to one cave in Ky and it had several pits in it.

mdiver,

The answer is there are plenty of both.
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

There will be a led trip to Fisher Ridge Cave which is vertical and is highly recommended. You need to be experienced in vertical caving techniques to do that trip. There are several led-to-entrance vertical trips offered also. I expect that Frenchman's knob pit will be popular over the weekend since it will be open by the SCCI for the first time in several years. Don't be afraid to come by yourself; it's a very social event with lots of stuff going on all weekend. Come check it out.

Were really excited about the cave list at Speleofest this year. We will have led trips into some of Kentucky's BIGGEST caves, which include Ropple Cave (one of the best caves in Kentucky), Hidden River Cave, Fisher Ridge, Constantine Saltpeter, Thornhill, and Big Bat. There are many others to choose from also, including some brand new caves that have never been offered before.
