2012 SERA - May 4 - 6

Postby CaverScott » Oct 11, 2011 5:19 pm

Were you at TAG? Did you see those crazy Birmingham Grotto folks during the SERA 2012 announcement? :yikes: Did you get one of the pre-registration forms?

The 2012 "Wild West" SERA Cave Carnival will be held the weekend of May 5, 2012 in Estill Fork, AL. Not only is this Cinco De Mayo weekend, it is during a full moon, and not to mention that this is the very HEART of TAG Caving. :kewl: You can arrive as early as Thursday, May 3 and stay through Sunday, May 6. We have TONS of room for camping, a limited number of RV sites, and even (now get this) a few cushy "hotel" type rooms. :woohoo: No kidding! (Reserve one early!) The site features a western town and we are planning on offering up a real steak dinner for a Saturday night banquet! :banana_yay:

The RV sites have already starting moving quickly and rumor has it that the lodge is almost sold out of rooms. If you pre-register, you can even order one of them new, fancy moisture wicking shirt things instead of the traditional 100% cotton heavy-duty T. Yup, no kiddin' :bananabat:

The webstie will be changing with t-shirt artwork, more photos, maps, and lots of cool stuff; however, in the meantime you can download the pre-registration form here:

http://www.bhamgrotto.org/

Now check this out: If you pre-register, you money is 100% refundable through March 20th! Go download the form, fill it out, and send your check to that gun-toting Edna right away! :banana_yay: :woohoo: :banana_yay:

Feel free to steal this annoucement and post it anywhere on the planet! Yeehhaawww!

And don't forget The Revenge of the Fifth

While caving in the area this past weekend, Jason Hardy and myself had the opportunity to stop by and visit the SERA site. Scott - y'all have done a wonderful job and have a ton of great activities lined up. The B'ham Grotto really knows how to throw a party...! Also not to mention there are a ton of AWESOME caves in the Paint Rock River Valley. They even have real showers and real toilets. Oh and a swimming pool..!

If anyone is still undecided about going I'd suggest you do. This is going to be one event you do not want to miss and cavers will be talking about for a long long time...! Make sure to bring something for shade though because it is mostly field camping and even though there is a tree line there isn't much natural shade.

Here is an image of Far Side Well, a 184' deep pit that we visited on Saturday.

Jason will also be leading a trip to Doodlebug Hole on Friday. Doodlebug has an entrance pit series of 330 feet. The pit is broken up into 3 drops and there are re belays. The cave is 450' deep and 7,359 feet long. There will be space for the thru trip and for those who just want to bounce the pit. Look for the signup sheet at the cave info booth. This trip will not be for beginners! You must be vertically competent. The thru trip is over a mile long and there are low/wet crawls as well. Oh and not to mention you will have to do a classic TAG Hell Hike to get to the entrance pit.
