Best Caving Advice?

Postby Wayne Harrison » Feb 5, 2006 9:30 am

What's the best caving advice you ever got? I'm looking for great quotes and got the idea from a quote board I frequent. I'm sure there are some memorable ones out there. Let's hear them!

On vertical caving. . . Sevaral years ago I was at a drop with an awkward lip. Several members of the group when nearing the top stopped climbing the rope and started climbing the rock. This led them to a the "wrong side of a boulder" where they then had to downclimb and come up the rope on the "right side of the boulder". One person on the trip commented after seveal folks had done that . . . "How many times do I have to tell you people?. . . just follow the string!"

Another good piece of advice on tight spots. "Think yourself small."

"Never climb or descend in a cave if it's not necessary." Saves time and energy, of course, but doesn't apply if you're looking for new leads...

"Never jump in a cave." A twisted ankle can be a very big deal in a cave. I was told that very early in my caving career and usually tell it to new cavers that go with me.

I agree with Wendy for that being most valuable advice I ever received.

It is also used as sound advice to instruct new sailors when moving about on deck, along with never jump.

When someone tells you it is a dry cave, ask, "How deep is the water (or mud)?"

"Don't go."

Unfortunately, I didn't listen.

1. Caving is dangerous. Don't do it.
2. Cave with the best! Cave alone!
3. No belay. No delay.

*Not good advise
Cave with the best, cave alone!
