Gee Creek Cave

Postby GypsumWolf » Jan 31, 2006 5:39 pm

I would like some information on Gee Creek Cave on Star Mountain, TN.
Some one I met found its location some how and he wants to go there, neither of us has ever been there.

Is it a horizontal cave or vertical?
Is there anything that I should know about that cave before going in to it?
The guy who knows where it is has not been caving much, maby once or twice so is it a cave for beginners?

I've been trying to locate Gee Creek Cave for about two years now ( when I first heard of it ).

I was wondering if you would share it's location.

Thanks

No, I will not just give out a cave location. Maby you could join a grotto and then ask them to take you there.
BTW: I don't have the location, my friend does so even if I would give it out, I could not.

Sorry WildWolf,
I'm new to this and didn't realize that was an inapropriate question to ask.
I see that there are several grottos in the area.
Do you recommend any in particular?

The Chattenuga grotto is a good one. I have not been to alot of the other grotto's so I can't really suggest one over another.

I know practically nothing about caves, but can tell you that Gee Creek cave is definitely horizontal, and has a lot of mud. It's about 900 feet of "tunnels" in total, and is safe enough that I let my 10 yr old son and his friends wander around with minimal supervision. They get muddy enough that I make them ride in the back of the truck until after I've taken them down to the river at Gee Creek Campground to wash off.

Gee Creek Cave is less than 1 mile from Gee Creek Campground. Stop in at the park office and Angie will give you a cave map ( if she still has any). URL for the park is http://state.tn.us/environment/parks/Hiwassee/
