What cavers and satanists have in common...

Postby Lava » Nov 16, 2005 2:44 pm

So I was at the Yahoo Groups site, and I did a search to see if the Central Indiana Grotto had a group, and this came up as the only result:

Apparently an organized group of satanists is also called a grotto! Whodathunkit...

Oh, wow. That's a bummer. Do you suppose there are more Satanists than cavers? I 'spose so, but I really have no idea. It might be worth passing a collection plate to get the money to trademark the name CIG. I'd send a couple of dollars to the fund.

Maybe CIG could copyright their slogan too: "Where darkness gathers so shall we, ...and we will not be afraid!"

I clicked on the link again, and see that they have 35 members, the group has been around for a year and a half, and they've had no activity on their group site in over a week. I'm not going to join their group, though, to read what they write.

I hear there's some excellent caving in hell.

Long, complex systems... self-lit passages... nice warm environment...
If I wind up there, I plan on bargaining for preferrential treatment in exchange for coordinating the mapping project.

I'm considering a dual NSS membership. Think I can get a discount on that??

I can imagine some of the posts...

"Satan rulez!"

"Sacrifices - which knife to go with?"

"Best detergent for getting chicken blood out of a cloak?"

"My sister's boyfriend's dad once bumped into Anton LeVey on the street"

"Poll: how evil are you?"

"Local satanist-friendly eateries"

A bunch of years ago I wrote this little blurb for my grotto newsletter:

Satan Approved For Membership Into The NSS

To the sound of mixed reviews, the Membership Committee of the National Spelological Society announced today that they would be accepting the membership application of the personification of evil; the entity known simply as Satan. This move, a landmark of its kind, has not gone unnoticed in the usually quiet circles of the caving community, and has in fact been both universally condemned and widely praised. Many, though, have sought to hold their judgement until after they had gotten to know the caving habits of the “Master of Deceitâ€

Supporters of Satan's membership point out that Hell, once surveyed, would easily surpass the Mammoth cave system as the largest subterranean network on earth. Furthermore, opening a connection to the surface would insure Hell the top spot in the vertical category as well.

Barb MacLeod told us in her 1972 cave ballad about the caver who found the connection between Cascade Cave and Hell.

I'm a member of the CIG, for what its worth, and I have been on some cave trips from hell, but I definately don't want to go caving in hell.
