Complete newcomer with semi-ambitious idea requests advice

Postby CaptSensible » Nov 13, 2018 9:10 pm

So. I have explored various caves without the use of specialized equipment (both above and below water). I have zero knowledge of caving as a more serious pastime.
Here's the deal: I want to explore a cave in northeast India that opens with a 97m (roughly 320 ft.) vertical descent. Where to start (in terms of learning about appropriate equipment)? Mock me all you want if this sounds silly - I do "silly" things quite regularly. Thanks!

Ah yes - the cave is Krem Shrieh. Cursory info. here: http://megtourism.gov.in/caves.html

Hi Capt Sensible,

I have been caving in Meghalaya a couple of times. Do I know you?

Here's who you need to be in touch with:

Where are you located?

I am not sure if there are vendors that sell caving equipment in India. Most of the caving vendors that I know of are based out of the United States and Europe. Petzl is a well known caving vendor based out of France that sells caving gear including vertical caving gear.

https://www.petzl.com/US/en or https://www.petzl.com/FR/fr/

In order to rappel this drop, you are going to need at least a 400 foot rope, vertical caving gear (a frog system is the most common vertical system which includes a seat harness, chest harness, hand ascender, chest ascender, foot loops, and descending device (like a rack)), a helmet, a headlight (many say that you should bring at least 3 headlights with you caving at all times), rappelling gloves, boots, and of course clothes that you are comfortable wearing while rappelling and caving.
