Most Survey in 1 year

Postby ProjectCaver » Sep 9, 2017 8:37 pm

I was recently wondering "What is the record for the highest amount of survey in a cave, in a year?" Does anyone know what cave had the most survey (not resurvey!) completed in the span of a year?

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't know for sure, but I highly suspect Mammoth Cave might hold the record as it has miles of big borehole.

That means my 270 feet of 2-foot high passage surveyed this year won't be in the record books? :tonguecheek:

I have some serious doubts that its mammoth, just because of the date range it was surveyed.

Snowy River is an amazing place, I think that the trips were held to three expeditions per year when it was going, so the year it had the camp it might have had around 8 miles??? That could put it in the running, I was hoping that this thread would lead to some people posting some numbers that they knew.

Not many project cavers are looking at this site. Or many cavers of any sort.
I know that the Rumbling Falls survey progressed rapidly after the discovery of the lower cave. M. O. Smith told me that they bought a 300' tape to speed up the survey, as they were shooting 100' legs one after another. Apparently they carried on with 300' shots for quite some time. Anyway, Marion could tell you precisely how many feet were mapped in any 365 day period.

Are you asking because you suspect that you've set the mark?

In my experience surveying a cave is not the part that counts, although it is obviously a necessary first step. Getting the data converted into an actual map is the hard part. I have a number of caves that I have surveyed but have yet to finish (or in some cases even start) the map.

I agree with you completely that the Map is often the hard part, but the survey is the exploration part, its where most of the excitement is found.

I know our first survey into Rubber Chicken Cave (part of the Frairs Hole System) we mapped 9400 ft with 3 survey teams. W added over 10 miles that year, 1976.
