New caver, few questions about Petty Johns

Postby weekendwarrior72 » Aug 1, 2016 1:34 pm

Hey everyone, I recently got into caving this last July. It's awesome, and as I live in the northern 'burbs of Atlanta, I'm relatively close to all that sweet TAG goodness. I've recently been making trips out to Petty Johns, getting as far as the bottom of the volcano room and the stream beds at the bottom of the cave. However, I'm trying to get to the discovery room, and want to take a different route instead of the volcano room- I want to bypass the volcano room via the Mason-Dixon passage. However, I'm unable to find the entrance to the flat room. Additionally, If anyone would like to join me and my party of 3 tomorrow, shoot me a pm.
Thanks

Hi Weekendwarrior:
There used to be a very nice, multi-page detailed map of PJ posted online by a guy named Hubert Crowell. Not sure where the bulk of them are anymore, as my Google searches don't seem to bring them up. Here is a link to one of them showing the entrance area:
http://www.hucosystems.com/Pettyjohn%20Entrance%20Room.pdf

This one shows what he calls the Labyrinth area:

I am not personally that familiar with PJ, otherwise I'd offer more advice on finding what you are looking for. Good luck, and cave safely!

Thanks, I found those before my trip on the and they were great. I've since figured it out the route, but I appreciate your help nonetheless.

Some part of me wants to go really far back into the outer limits, I would love to see what porta Johns looks like where nobody ever goes.

I found a nice pile of poop, cigarettes, and much much more, the boulders are great... too bad it's so abused.

Jack Furlong (super cool) is the only one I know of who is seriously exploring Pettyjohns. I have caved with him a few times in PJ's and he is always looking for someone to push PJ if you are interested. You can check him out at https://www.facebook.com/jack.furlong.311 OR https://www.facebook.com/groups/362256723821/. I also have his contact info (PM me). Be prepared, he is the fastest person I have seen underground. Jack effortlessly floats through cracks, climbs walls in seconds and is over boulders like they don't exist so be prepared to move fast to the Outer Limits of PJ where he is checking leads. Most recently he has found a new lead in the back of the Echo Room he is trying to push. There is a window in Echo Room about 30' up that from the ground looks like it has a lead. I don't have a bolting system to try it. Wall looks clean, I don't think anyone has bolted it to check it out yet.

All TAG cavers join http://www.SCCI.org. A small price for a GREAT resource.
