if you give them the routing number of your checking account they can. Even with your employers direct deposit that routing number can also allow them to take money out.

Your bank routing number and account number are on every check you write. You can use that to have someone transfer funds INTO your account, but I think you would have to have some sort of verification of identity to take money out.

Even if this was legit, what would he want to do with these locations? Publish them, obviously.

Would you betray the caving community for almost no money?

If a person accepts the money this guy offers, they also incur liability. That is when it can get ugly.

No, "they" (random people) can't take money out just because they have the routing number to your checking account. "They" (your employer) is a different situation, because your direct deposit agreement usually allows an employer limited rights to reverse overpayment, for example. I've given out my routing/account number to relative strangers so they can do one-time direct deposits into my account. No real security risk with this. It's not like I'm giving them the online user name and password.
