Grotto question...

Postby graveleye » May 9, 2006 12:26 pm

Is it considered poor form to be affiliated with more than one grotto.. or be a member of more than one grotto? Just curious. My region has several clubs with various degrees of activity, and there is always something going on. What think you good people?

I can't imagine why it would be considered poor form, so long as you tithe each grotto the usual 10% of your income.

Here in the northeast, there's a lot of shared membership in grottos. For every one person who diligently pays all his dues at the beginning of the year, there's several more who just hang around and hear four grottos' worth of trips, or people who simply forget how many people they feel obligated to throw $10 or $20 toward.

Belonging to more then one grotto is not unusual at all. Be aware, though, that you may only be counted as a member for Congress of Grotto purposes by one grotto. In other words, your membership record in the NSS database only records one grotto/IO for voting purposes.

That is a long standing NSS bylaw.

Is it bad form to like more than one flavor of ice cream?

Naaaaaah! I've got a whole alphabet soup of cave affiliations.

No worries. I used to belong to two grottos. Some cavers in my grotto belong to several other grottos. The more the merrier, I say.

I belong to two grottos AND the NSS... should I recend one of them? Of course not. By being a multi-member I'm helping out where-ever, however and whenever I can. :kewl:

This is all sort of my thinking too so I am glad to see your responses. I just wanted to check first. I'm not new to caving, but I am new to being involved in caving groups.
Its been sort of hard to get to know people though - which is a tad frustrating for me at my age (probably older than many, but younger than many too), but I figured if I could spread myself around, I could make more friends. Friendship and caving partners is something I want more than just about anything. My old caving buddies have all lost interest or have no time for it anymore, so its just my wife and I these days. We're in an interesting position because our kiddies are grown up, leaving us in the empty nest at a relatively young age!!

Unfortunatly, though, 2 people doth not maketh a proper caving expedition!

Anyway, thanks for your replies!!
