DeLorme inReach Explorer Satellite Messenger

Has anyone used one of these or know very much about them?

I'm a little confused between DeLorme's service and Iridium service and how much you need of either/both to do which functions.

I have no personal backcountry experience with either device, but I was chatting with somebody in the know a while back. They recommended the DeLorme using the Iridium network over the Spot tracker using Globalstar. Something about more features/options and superior coverage, at least up here in Alaska.

I knew someone with an ACR PLB (personal locator beacon) and he recommended over the SPOT, too. Then I saw this thing. It let you post to FB while out in the boonies. Not so much that I feel the need to be connected, but I like the idea of sending txts or FB to my family in case I need help that falls short of an all out SAR callout. But I don't want to pay a ton of money or need a lot study to follow the instructions.

Satellite messenger devices are considerably less powerful than PLBs and virtually always require an open view of the sky to transmit successfully. The Iridium Network has 100% planetary coverage while the spot covers most major land masses. And the biggest bonus about PLBs is that they don't have a subscription fee every year.

Here's a fairly comprehensive review comparing several different units - http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Personal- ... on-Reviews
