On my sisters property there is a hole about halfway up a several hundred foot mountain.

the hole feeds a creek and is 100% sumped at the entrance... i know i can check it out in a drought but in everyones opinion is this promising?

hole is 3 feet wide you can see back about 4 feet. slight downward angel.

I just realized I have not hiked above this hole, that might be smart.

Best way to find out is to try it when it's not sumped if possible.

Airflow is a normal sign, but that only works if it isn't sumped and air can get in or out. When there is airflow you can often feel a change in temperature around a cave entrance. And during times of day you might be able to feel a breeze or see steam.

Otherwise I'd say that it depends how much water there is that is "sumping" the entrance. If it is 3 inches...then not super promising. If there is more than a foot...maybe. If there is several feet...

It depends on what limestone there is at the location, how thick the layers are, the slope of the bedding plane, etc.

In the area I work in most, that would be a Hartselle spring, so it might have 150-250' of good limestone above it. It would probably have a long crawl to a series of domes and nicer passage, and a vertical entrance above that.

^^ good point. Its not the best area, its a lot of sandstone layer but there is also some limestone at the surface, there are caves in the area but everything is 150 feet and less according to the gss so i don't expect the cave to be super big but i cant wait to stick that paddle in the hole and find out.
