Question about Haute-Garrone (Montespan) cave art

Postby jshowalter » Apr 20, 2014 6:12 pm

In Norbert Casteret's book, "Ten Years Under The Earth", the first chapter describes his discovery of the clay statues and wall paintings way at the back of a long cave, which has a large part underwater.

How did the artists get back there in the first place? Was there a change in geology that caused the water level to rise?

All Casteret says about it is "The marvelous preservation of such curious remains is, of course, due to the fact that the cavern has been inaccessible from prehistoric times to the present day."

Probably another entrance that collapsed shut thousands of years ago, or debris accumulating along the stream to raise the water level.
