Newbies on a roll to KY?

Postby irrka » Apr 27, 2006 3:03 pm

Hi! My friend and I just tried caving for the first time for a couple of weeks in Belize and absolutely loved it. We were thinking of heading down to KY for a few days to explore, but started to get bogged down trying to figure out where to go and such.
Anybody have suggestions of where would be a cool place to go explore for a couple of kids that are pretty much newbies but might not want to do quite the 5yo-to-90yo tour thing?
Thanks!

Irene,

I'm sure you'll get other answers to your question but I would suggest looking into the wild cave tours offered by the National Park Service at Mammoth Cave as a good introduction. There are limited spaces and they fill up months in advance, so keep that in mind.

They last 6 to 6 1/2 hours and go 5 1/2 miles.

" Free-climbing cave walls; lengthy crawls through areas as tight as 9 inches high; walking in a crouched position; hand and knee crawls over jagged rocks and dirt; crawling through wet areas; twisting into and out of tight crawlway openings."
