South Park is going caving

Postby hewhocaves » Apr 25, 2006 9:03 pm

Tomorrow night's south park will revolve at least partly around a cave trip. The preview looks pretty good.

Wed, 10pm on comedy central.

from the website:

Manbearpig.

The boys are trapped in a cave and Cartman finds treasure....

Cave of the Winds is an actual commercial cave and an institutional member of the National Speleological Society. It is located near Manitou Springs, and is celebrating its 125th Anniversary of commercial tours this year.

Colorado cavers have worked closely with the cave's owners in finding extensive and beautiful new passageways and chambers in the Cave of the Winds and in other caves of the canyon, including Breezeway Cave, which was featured in a past edition of the NSS News.

It's interesting that the Cave of the Winds entrance building was shown in the cartoon as it appeared prior to a 1975 expansion, even including the entrance sign. I suspect one of the cartoonists must have had an old tour brochure that they used as a guide.

The cave map was completely made up, but the Cave of the Winds location map that Al Gore showed the boys was correct.

Also, there is no "Smuggler's Den" with old bones and treasure in the cave. As to a "manbearpig," I think the former VP might have been on to something...

In looking at the South Park Website, I noticed they also did a previous episode on Casa Bonita, a "popular" Mexican eatery (complete with waterfall-jumping divers) here in Colorado.

Of interest is part of Casa Bonita has a "cave" motif and I was involved in "surveying" it in the 70s with some members of the School of Mines Grotto. The restaurant employees kinda freaked about what we were doing. This was during a time that a number of restaurants were the targets of purse bombs in the Denver metro area.

There seems to be a couple places you can download the episodes. Motherload is supposed to have it, but it's not Mac compatible. :( iTunes will have it, probably next week, for $1.99. If anyone finds this episode somewhere else, let us know.

it'll probably be on comedy central again before next wednesday.

regarding the cave of the winds map... the branchwork pattern and overall squareness of the map reminded me more of the 'historic' part of Jewel Cave.

I have to admit, I googled "smuggler's den" to see if it really was in Cave of the Winds...

i have yet to see the episode... I'm usually all over southpark on wednesdays, but I have not TV or cable, so I just hope to be on the road for work to see it!

I saw the ads for it and it looked pretty funny!
