Are Surprise and Pompey caves one and the same?
Thanks,

If you're talking about the New York caves, no. Pompeys is an open cave on private land near Rosendale, NY. Surprise (formerly sometimes called Mystery Cave, but not recently) is far more south in NY. It is owned by the state of NY, and under stewardship with the Northeastern Cave Conservancy. It is currently closed due to White Nose Syndrome, which has killed virtually all its bats. Pompeys is a non-bat stream cave that regularly floods to the ceiling, but is popular and fun to visit when the water is down.

Thanks for clearing that up! I think I was confusing Surprise/Mystery cave. - John
