Summer Volunteer Positions at Jewel Cave National Monument

Jewel Cave National Monument is seeking full-time resource management volunteers for summer 2013. Duties include exotic plant control (cutting, pulling, and spraying noxious weeds) and cave restoration. Although the position is unpaid, housing will be provided in a shared apartment, at no cost to the volunteer. This is a great way to get your foot in the door with the National Park Service, gain valuable on-the-job experience, and spend the summer in one of the country's best caving locations! The position is anticipated to start on May 20, 2013 and end on September 27, 2013 (however, the end date is negotiable).

Field work involves hiking long distances over uneven terrain, in a wide variety of weather conditions, carrying heavy packs and equipment. Experience with exotic plant identification and treatment, GPS data collection, and cave restoration is desirable, and applicants must possess a strong cave conservation ethic.

Jewel Cave is located in the southwestern Black Hills of South Dakota, 13 miles west of the town of Custer (population ~1,800). Custer has gas stations, groceries, and cell service. Rapid City (population ~80,0000) is 55 miles away, and has more services, including a regional airport.
