Caving in Japan

Postby abdon » Mar 12, 2006 6:46 am

Howdy folks.

After many many years of inactivity I find myself in Northern Japan, with a strong desire to go underground again!

I know this is a long shot but, are there any english speaking cavers on northern Japan on this forum? If somebody could help me hook up with local cavers it would be appreciated.

There are a zillion cave clubs in Japan, I'm sure a Google search would help you find something in the north there (Honshu? Hokkaido?). I caved with the Pioneer Caving Club in 1991; if they are typical, Japanese cavers are very friendly and accommodating.

Believe it or not Google has been less than useful. Up here in the North (Honsu) I know for a fact that there is a good number of world-class caves, which begs the assumption that there ought to be more than a handful of clubs. All i have found on the web so far is the outdated Japan Speleological web site and clubs in Tokyo (far, far away) and beyond.

I emailed the J. Speleo society and a Tokyo club. Hopefully they will put me in contact with the right people.

Yup, I found that a while back. No POC for northern Japan clubs.

Japan is actually quite large, made even larger by slooooooow speed limits and murderous road tolls. A trip to Tokyo in the so-called highway would take me 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 hour, plus $260 each (yes each) way.

I sent an email to a large Tokyo club. Hopefully they have an English speaker that can put me in contact with another English speaker up here.

The good news is that it looks like the best caves are way up here, so once I'm set it is up to the Tokyo folks to pay the $200+ 8+ hours to get to them :-)
