Brian,
I personally do not feel that any mention of religious affliation is necessary in any post to this DB. Anyone who is interested in travelling world wide to cave should be aware of the risks inherant to the regions of the world in which they travel. To be intolerant of a religion based on a few extremists is a very narrow world view.

Just my 2 cents.

Philippines Visit

I agree. Hind site is 20/20. My only point was to show that this part of the country is free from terrorism and is safe to visit for Americans. The Muslim area in southern Philippines is not safe. Even the US state department issued a warning for visiting the Muslim areas in the southern Philippines.

If I could go back a few days I would not have mentioned it either way. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Romulin,

Glad you like the caves here. Feel free to PM me when you return. We may be of assistance. I'm a member of an active grotto in Manila and we've also part of the Philippine Speleological Society (hey, that sounds really familiar LOL :D). The PSS has groups all over the country.

Anyway, sidestepping the religious references, I do agree with you. A huge percentage of karst areas here are safer than what the news would like you to believe. But I strongly urge anyone coming here for caving to get in touch with local caving groups for assistance. We do exist but caving in the Philippines is still a very obscure activity.

A lot of areas may be safer for foreigners than parts to the south but there are still the local communist rebels in the rest of the country to contend with and they might not like foreigners walking around their territory. Locals in the vicinity and cavers here can help negotiate for "safer" caving conditions :)

ah Isabela. Nice province. My family is from the province close to it, Cagayan. :) our grotto is heading to nearby Nueva Viscaya end for this month for a surveying trip.

I've heard of a lot of potential in Isabela but haven't really been there caving. We often head up to Cagayan, which has a huge karst area and Nueva Viscaya, where we have ongoing long term projects.

Parts of Isabela are very much in NPA (rebel) hands but I'm sure you're quite safe if the guides are present.
