Webster Cave Complex Survey

Postby Darklight » Sep 5, 2005 10:18 am

Glad to see the board is up and running again, and in this nice format!

Just wanted to make a quick note about our recent survey efforts in Kentucky's Webster Cave System (Breckinridge County). For the past several months, there has been a flurry of activity in the main cave. Serious exploration has been ongoing there since the early 1980s' but only recently have systematic efforts started to survey there.

Image

To the uninitiated, Webster Cave is characterized by large (read very large) borehole. Lakes punctuate the three miles of main passage, many of which are very long and deep.

Image

The condition's aren't always so warm and fuzzy, however. Miles of side leads, some of which lead to even greater expanses of unexplored areas, are not much fun!

Image

Currently we have about 16,500 feet surveyed, collated over about 14 trips. The maps are slowly beginning to be drawn, and all indications are it is going to be a beautiful project when it is all completed. Below is a section of an early draft of the map, at 1:50:

We welcome all cavers to this project. It has been a worldwide effort so far with cavers from as far as Europe participating. If you're interested in joining the survey, give me a holler or check the WCCSG site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WCCSG/

Our next scheduled monthly trip is SEPT 17 (though there may be an interim trip on SEPT 11).

Shameless bump...

Exploration and survey in the Webster Cave System is progressing at a rapid pace. Just another invite to all interested cavers to join the WCCSG! I've recently made it easier for non-memebrs to keep up with the project on our website. And, as always, anyone interested is welcome to join us...

Have you guys noticed many bats using the cave during your surveys?

Sell those sten lights on e-bay... they might be good... they might not... But until the test of time has come thru, I'm stickin' to my ceiling burner. Besides... ever set up a carbide tent with a sten light?

I bet they don't work so good.

Bats...

Postby Darklight » Jan 19, 2006 7:01 pm

Yes, some bats. Not very many. There is usually a small "colony" about 1300 feet in, in the main trunk. We saw some pips way, way past the North Bore Sump (2" of air--far to low for a bat to fly through IMO). These were up in Upper East Bore. Also a few skeletons up here. I think they come in another way... Also saw some pips in Derelict Lead, about 14000 feet in. This is a high and (relatively) dry upper lead not ordinarily prone to flooding. Why do they fly so far in (unless they come in an easier way).

Celing burners...

Postby Darklight » Jan 19, 2006 7:10 pm

Ah, the lovely smell! You'll note I am using one in the above image. But, Webster is just too big to really see anything with one. Good side light, and a great addition to the Sten. No substiture I am afraid...

Fantastic photos. I had no idea Western KY had stuff like that. I thought it was all muddy crawls.

Not that there's anything wrong with muddy crawls, of course! :)
